I Prefer My Flowers To Be A Little Apocalyptic

I’ve been posting a lot of my news photography lately, which does make sense with my being a news photographer and all, and this being Festival Season in Vankleek Hill, so there is a lot of news to shoot.

But I do shoot a lot of other stuff. Kind of… I have, basically, two subjects when I’m not shooting news — my sons, and nature. I can take portraits of non-family but, being an introvert, I do have a hard time asking. And I find street-photography a little overwhelming, especially in my Little Village. Which sucks, because I love looking at street-photography.

And I even find taking photos of nature to be difficult… when I take a photo of a tree, it just looks like a tree. Somehow, people can find Art in trees [1. link 2. link 3. link], whereas my shots of them just turn out looking like a forest.

“I was going to comment about how so many of your photos look apocalyptic (the truck spewing fire one, the one with the RV and the clouds, all the other ones [link] with the clouds…) but then I remembered about all those bright, flowery pictures you have taken [1. link 2. link] and your level of badassery drops a notch.”
— Amy, my little sister.

But, for some reason, I’m okay going into people’s gardens unannounced. Or at least I used to be, I haven’t really had the time to do anything other than news photos recently — just taking photos at the VKH PorchFest [link] alone took six hours out of my day. Over many years of invading other people’s gardens, I’ve found that the best time to be photographing flowers is during the Fall — while they’re in the process of dying off.

Anyway. Ever since I decided I like apocalyptic flowers more than those in bloom, I’ve taken a lot of shots of them. These are all from a few years ago, but they’re some of my favourite flower shots.

…so now, if you’re down with it, you just click on a photo to get the carousel going.
