The first album I ever bought was Abba’s ‘Super Trouper’… I bought it for my mother, but I believe I was the only one in the family who ever listened to it. I remember bringing it to class in grade school, not too long after it was released, and a couple of kids read the liner notes for their 1980 hit, “On and On and On”, and were super impressed that it had a swear word in it. I was so cool for about an hour. All that said, I have more than 11,000 songs on my computer, with 78 different genres, and only one album pops up when I search for ‘Disco’… and that’s “Atlantis: Hymns for Disco” by Canada’s own, ‘k-os’ [awesome video here]. I just never really got into the Disco genre.
I kind of grew up on Revolutionary Hymns, then Paul McCartney & Wings, Steely Dan and Chris DeBurgh, a little later on it was Judas Priest, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden, then I went through my Punk years — Circle Jerks, AntiPasti, Forgotten Rebels, and then I had an expert school me in the ways of Blues and Jazz. I never really had a proper Disco era in my younger years. Actually, most of the people I grew up with had a real distain for the genre. But, having just attended my first real Disco concert, I’ve realized Disco never hurt anybody. Seriously, when was the last time you read or heard anything about a riot over a Disco song or concert? People have actually been killed at Rock shows, people can get absolutely wrecked in the Pit at Punk shows, people actually get beaten up for wearing banana outfits at Hardcore shows [story here]… but Disco? It’s really just a big party.
Montreal’s own ‘Boogie Wonder Band’ [homepage here] brought a two-hour non-stop Disco party featuring the music of Abba, Donna Summer, the Bee Gees, KC & the Sunshine Band, and Gloria Gaynor to Hawkesbury this past Saturday night, as part of the little city’s 5th Annual Multicultural Festival. And I liked it so much, I actually bought one of their T-shirts… which might have happened because I was so very very very tired from being up all night downloading, editing, and posting photos from the night before but, after waking up after sleeping all day Sunday, I now believe it was because the concert was just so much fun [YouTube here].
…the first night of the 2026 version of the Festival featured Héloïse Yelle, Mélissa Bédard, Ludovick Bourgeois, and Martin Deschamps. The crowd was huge, and everybody had a rocking good time [photos here]. But the second night, with the ten-piece Boogie Wonder Band [Facebook here], was an actual ‘wave your hands in the air’ party.
…anyway, I enjoyed it. To see photos from the second night of the Festival, just click on the first photo to get the carousel going — remember, comments are always welcome, and now absolutely free to make.
